IN TIMES OF TROUBLE

This was a welcome Ray of Light to start an otherwise overcast and gloomy day. What with all the shit going down in the markets yesterday, and the incredible demise of Lehman Bro.s, it would have been very difficult to put on a brave face and continue to enjoy the shows this week in London Town…

But there is hope! – in the form of this article that i found today on the TimesOnline. It is a very encouraging and inspiring piece on the growing power and influence of the London Fashion Scene. Although to me it’s like pointing out the obvious, it describes through the words of several contributors from industry how we are not only a dynamic, vibrant and expressive Fashion Capital, but that we are also nurturing and supporting our new and existing fashion talents so that they can produce and sell their products on a commercial level – enabling them to grow their businesses and establish themselves as forces to be reckoned with in a fiercely competitive industry.

In times of economic crisis such as these, it’s good to know that you’ll be backing a winner if you invest heart, soul, and hard currency in London Fashion.

Canadian Olympic Uniforms on Parade

Canadian Olympic Uniforms on Parade

A Mr Sameer Reddy has written a very interesting article for Newsweek.com, analysing and commenting on the ‘uniforms’ of each nation’s athletes in the Olympic Opening Ceremony. To read the article in full, click on this link:

I would urge you to also read just a sampling of some of the comments that were written in response.
I just could not believe the reactions it provoked! Those people are angry – but i somehow think that they’ve missed the point – and misdirected their anger…

As a Womenswear Designer who has a deep love of history and politics, i constantly relate fashion and that form of self expression to ‘the bigger picture’ – the events going on in the world around us have the ability to make massive impacts on our lifestyles, therefore somewhat dictating our tastes and behaviours. It is fascinating how you can really gauge the mood of a people/nation by looking at what they choose to wear. Some of us think about style and dress more than others – some of us being more comfortable with using our bodies as vehicles of self-expression – but a vast majority of us choose ‘not to bother’. Little do they know that by making that choice, they have already thought about what they are wearing more than they would like to admit.

If each country/nation competing in the Olympics had paraded a work of art around the Bird’s Nest Arena in the place of their kitted-out teams, and Mr Reddy had then written a similar article analysing the self-expression of each nation through that work, I doubt very much that his article would have garnered such a violent response from its readers.

I think that people are quick to judge Mr Reddy’s opinions and studies in this case as ‘frivolous’ and ‘pointless’ because they don’t consider fashion as a worthwhile or important form of expression. But it is – more so than any other form, because we don’t all paint pictures and write poems everyday – but we do all have to get dressed (for the most part!) Even those who do not have a choice in what they wear and are dressed out of necessity – the condition and function of their garments still make powerful visual impressions and tell the wearer’s story, better than any amount of words. This form of expression transcends language barriers – making communication between different nationalities possible where it otherwise would have been completely impossible.

For all of these reason, it is perfectly natural and appropriate to read meanings in a person’s dress or uniform – especially when they present themselves on such a high profile international platform such as the Olympic Games!

PRINCE CHARLES IS A TOTAL LEGEND.

I have always adored Prince Charles. Even through the whole Diana/Camilla fiasco. Some may think he’s a ‘wimp’ or a spineless mummy’s boy, and god knows all the ‘Diana-Die-Hards’ out there despise him and think he’s Satan’s P.A. But I completely and passionately disagree with all of them.

He is a kind, sympathetic, conscientious, intelligent, wise man – perfectly suited to take over the position of power from his mother (a change-over which is way over due.)

What really excited me about him – and what contradicts most people’s perceptions of him – is that he is a truly modern thinker, and really engaged and switched-on to the crucial domestic problems we have got to start dealing with on these Isles. He highlights our environmental issues, questions and seeks to improve our agricultural systems and food production, and works with many national and international organizations in order to come up with real solutions for both us and the global community.

The front page of the Telegraph today is dominated by a story about the Prince speaking out against the mass development of GM crops, and warning of the devastating impact it will have on the environment worldwide. Read the article in full here.

WORDS OF WISDOM FROM THE PRINCE

WORDS OF WISDOM FROM THE PRINCE

And not only is he smart, responsible and a reassuring presence in the Palace, he is the most wonderful dresser! Seriously – he is one of our last surviving Monarchs who has an effortless and traditional British flair for fashion! Please – just look at what he’s wearing in the picture accompanying the Daily Telegraph article today: Charcoal blazer, pale blue shirt and tie under a charcoal v-neck sweater, cufflinks, signet ring, jazzy kilt and WAY jazzier long socks. Seasonal? Maybe not. On trend? Well, yes actually – due to the tartan revival that was apparent on the AW08 catwalks back in February.

But that’s all beside the point, because – tell me – who else could pull off pulled-up cornflower blue and moss green checked socks like Prince Charles? Yeah, that’s right. Nobody. The man is a legend.

Will someone just get him on the throne already?!
